I’ve been sick with a miserable cold for 10 days now. Last night was another low sleep night and I coughed so hard my muscles were in spasm. In the morning I wandered back into the master bedroom and climbed into bed with my wife as she read the paper. She said, “poor guy” and commiserated with me. She asked if I wanted some hot tea which I jumped at. A few minutes later my tea arrived so hot I couldn’t drink it so I held it in my hands as I nodded off to sleep. A few minutes later I woke up and excitedly took a sip. It was horrible and tasted like I was drinking an ashtray.

Now I assumed this was my usual English breakfast tea with cream and a Splenda and that the strange taste was me, so I took another sip. Yecchh! But I didn’t say anything as my dear wife gets upset about such things as me not liking what she has conjured up with her little fingers. Perhaps she was trying out some new health tea and took another sip as I looked over at her.
She looked at me with a sweet smile and asked, “How is it?” I looked at her and said, “It tastes terrible – what is it?” She laughed and said, “Give it to me” and took off for the kitchen. She came back shortly with my tea and it tasted great. “What was the last cup” I asked? She said, “coffee and tea. I made a mistake and left the Crupps coffee insert from my coffee in while I made hot water for your tea.”

I said, “Wait – you knew my tea was half coffee and you went ahead and added cream and Splenda mixed it up and gave it to me like I wouldn’t notice? You have got to be kidding!” At that point as I was shaking my head, we both started laughing at the absurdity of the situation. I mean I’m pretty picky about my coffee and tea and for her to think I wouldn’t notice was funny.
We had a pretty good laugh about it and she headed out to the office. That’s the way life is sometimes – we don’t get exactly what we expect or want. If we are the offender what will we do though? When we make a mistake – admit it quickly, take responsibility and fix it the best way possible. If we are the offended, make it easy for the other person to make things right. Keep a good attitude and sense of humor and hopefully you can have a good laugh as we did.
