You know I’m not a big Elton John fan but I am a big fan of how people mature. I call it, “The Journey.” It’s one we all go through and some mature sooner than others. You have probably heard the phrase, “To soon old and to late smart.” Elton’s story is the typical story of rock star excess with drugs, sex and rock and roll. The difference is Elton matured.

His catalyst was 12 year old Ryan White who through no fault of his own contracted AIDS. When Elton heard what this boy went through, he connected with the reality beyond his spoiled lifestyle and he changed. He said, “I thought, look at me. I have everything I want, and I complain about a hotel room because I don’t like the wallpaper?’ What happened to me? I was a nice decent boy, and now I’m a self-obsessed drug addict.” “So I got sober.” Yes, Elton matured and changed his life. Now he tries to “make amends” for his previous behavior.

That doesn’t mean he is perfect or completely mature as evidenced by some of his most recent statements. But then that is true of most of us. Much like success, maturity is something we always work toward-It is never too late for any of us to do good. Don’t let mistakes of the past stop our doing better in the future.  Visualize who you want to be and go for it!
